Sunday 2 August

Horsham → Stonehenge → Salisbury → Abergavenny / Crickhowell

Sleep: Abergavenny / Crickhowell

This is a travel day with two proper stops before Wales.

MorningLeave Horsham early. Stonehenge first. Book a timed entry if possible.
MiddaySalisbury: Cathedral, Cathedral Close, lunch. Keep the visit compact.
AfternoonDrive to Abergavenny or Crickhowell. If you leave Salisbury with enough time and energy, Tintern Abbey is the best scenic detour; otherwise skip it.
EveningCrickhowell for a smaller town feel. Abergavenny for more places to eat.

Walk

Crickhowell Bridge and the River Usk. Short, flat enough, good after a long drive.

Worth seeing

Tintern Abbey only if the day has not already become too long.

Practical

Stonehenge lists 09:30–18:00 opening in this season, with last entry at 16:00.

Monday 3 August

Abergavenny / Crickhowell → Tenby / Saundersfoot

Sleep: Tenby / Saundersfoot

Morning inland. Afternoon by the sea.

MorningCrickhowell bridge, River Usk, High Street. Or Abergavenny Market Hall and coffee.
LunchEat before leaving, or stop around Llandeilo if taking the more scenic inland route.
AfternoonDrive to Tenby or Saundersfoot. The Brecon–Llandovery–Llandeilo line is the better-looking route if the weather is clear.
EveningTenby harbour, Castle Hill, North Beach or South Beach.

Walk

Crickhowell river walk before checkout, then no serious walking after the drive.

Good stop

Llandeilo is a better lunch stop than a service area.

Photo view

Table Mountain behind Crickhowell is the classic view from the bridge.

Tuesday 4 August

Tenby / Saundersfoot

Sleep: Tenby / Saundersfoot

Keep one day close to base. Tenby is better on foot than from a car park.

MorningHarbour, Castle Hill, town walls, old streets.
MiddayBeach time or lunch near the harbour.
AfternoonCaldey Island if boats run and the weather suits it. Otherwise walk part of the coast toward Saundersfoot.
EveningNorth Beach or South Beach near sunset.

Walk

Tenby harbour to Castle Hill, then the beaches. Easy and flexible.

Wildlife

Caldey boat trips can add seabirds and coastal views. Tickets are day-of-travel and sea conditions matter.

Webcam

Check the Tenby webcams before committing to a beach or boat day.

Wednesday 5 August

St Davids, Solva and the coast

Sleep: Tenby / Saundersfoot

Cathedral first, then coast. Do not try to see every cove.

MorningDrive to St Davids. Cathedral and close.
LunchSt Davids or Solva.
AfternoonPick one: Solva harbour, St Non’s, Whitesands, or Caerfai. A short coast path section is better than a rushed loop.
EveningBack to Tenby / Saundersfoot.

Walk

St Non’s to Caerfai, or Solva harbour up to the Gribin viewpoint.

Wildlife

Possible seals and coastal birds. Puffins are a poor bet by early August; Skomer’s main puffin season is May–July.

Good stop

Solva is small but worth it for the harbour and short climb above the inlet.

Thursday 6 August

Tenby / Saundersfoot → Llandudno / Conwy

Sleep: Llandudno / Conwy

This is the long drive. Make it clean. Choose one stop, not three.

MorningLeave Pembrokeshire after breakfast.
LunchChoose Aberaeron harbour for a neat coastal stop, or push further north and stop near Barmouth/Mawddach.
AfternoonDrive through Mid/North Wales. If the sky is clear, the approach through the mountains is part of the point.
EveningCheck in. Conwy quay or Llandudno promenade only.

Walk

Barmouth Bridge / Mawddach estuary if you need to stretch your legs.

View

The Mawddach estuary is the best landscape break on the transfer.

Rule for the day

Lunch stop plus view stop is fine. Full sightseeing is not.

Friday 7 August

Conwy and Llandudno

Sleep: Llandudno / Conwy

Castle town in the morning, seaside town in the afternoon.

MorningConwy Castle. Walk the town walls if the weather is dry.
LunchConwy quay or Llandudno.
AfternoonLlandudno promenade, pier, Happy Valley, Great Orme.
EveningPromenade or Conwy quay.

Walk

Conwy town walls for views over the town and estuary.

Wildlife

The Great Orme has feral Kashmiri goats. Do not feed them.

Practical

Conwy Castle is listed by Cadw as 09:30–18:00 in July/August.

Saturday 8 August

Anglesey or slower North Wales day

Sleep: Llandudno / Conwy

The stronger full-day option is Anglesey. The lighter option is Great Orme plus Conwy/Llandudno leftovers.

MorningAnglesey option: Llanfairpwll sign, Beaumaris Castle, Menai Strait.
MiddayBeaumaris or Menai Bridge for lunch.
AfternoonSouth Stack Lighthouse and cliffs. Check wind/weather before going.
EveningBack to Llandudno/Conwy. Pack before the airport morning.

Walk

South Stack viewpoint paths. Lighthouse access involves many steps and weather closures.

Wildlife

South Stack cliffs are good for seabirds. Puffins are possible in season, but early August is late.

Fallback

Skip Anglesey if the weather is poor. Use the Great Orme and Conwy walls instead.

Sunday 9 August

Llandudno / Conwy → Manchester Airport

Arrive: 12:00

No sightseeing plan. Leave enough time for traffic, fuel, rental-car return, and airport approach.

MorningBreakfast, checkout, depart around 09:00 if you want a safe airport arrival.
DriveLlandudno/Conwy to Manchester Airport.
12:00Arrive Manchester Airport.
If 12:00 later becomes a flight departure time rather than airport arrival time, sleep near Manchester Airport on 8 August.

Walks worth adding

Stackpole Quay to Barafundle Bay

Short walk from Stackpole Quay to a very strong beach. Continue to Bosherston only if the weather is settled.

Bosherston Lily Ponds

Flat paths, water, reeds, birds. The National Trust lists a 1 mile Lily Ponds trail and a longer 6 mile wildlife walk.

Conwy town walls

Best short walk in Conwy. Do it before or after the castle.

Great Orme

Good views without needing a mountain day. Use the tram, drive, or do a short walking loop.

Solva harbour viewpoint

Short climb above the harbour. Good if St Davids Cathedral alone feels too static.

Mawddach / Barmouth leg stretch

Use this only on the northbound transfer if the day is going well.

Wildlife notes

Puffins

Skomer puffins are mainly May–July. Early August is late; plan for coast and seabirds, not guaranteed puffins.

Seals

Pembrokeshire has seals. Late summer and autumn are stronger for pups than the start of August. Keep distance.

Caldey / Tenby boats

Good coastal views if boats run. Tickets are bought on the day and sailings depend on sea conditions.

Great Orme goats

Realistic wildlife note for North Wales. They roam the Orme and sometimes the town. Watch, do not feed.

South Stack seabirds

Strong cliffs and birdlife. Lighthouse access has steps and weather restrictions.

Dolphins

Possible around Cardigan Bay, especially farther south around New Quay, but this route only passes through. Do not build the day around it.
